Pre European Maori came through the Wakatipu in search of pounamu (greenstone) and to hunt the Moa (large pre-historic bird). Gold in the Shotover River was the first draw card for European settlers in 1862.
High country farming of merino sheep, deer and cattle have been significant since the early days, and over 50 years ago skiing at nearby Coronet Peak was first commenced. More recently film location scouts have discovered these unspoilt backdrops as superb locations for the film industry. The huge box-office hit Lord of the Rings owes much to this dramatic scenery, some of the best the world has to offer.
