Pre European Maori came through the Wakatipu in search of pounamu (greenstone) and to hunt the Moa (large pre-historic bird). Gold in the Shotover River was the first draw card for European settlers in 1862.

High country farming of merino sheep, deer and cattle have been significant since the early days, and over 50 years ago skiing at nearby Coronet Peak was first commenced. Today if you’re a Lord of the Rings fan you’ll recognize many of the locations of Middle-earth here.

Head out of Queenstown and the drama of the Central Otago landscape unfolds around you.  Twenty minutes from Queenstown, Arrowtown’s gold-mining history is alive and vibrant. Visit the Lakes District Museum or go gold panning. Forty minutes from Queenstown at the northern tip of Lake Wakatipu is Glenorchy and Paradise. From here it’s a short drive into the Mt Aspiring National Park and the start of some of New Zealand’s great walks.

Nearby are easily accessible ski fields, and for adrenaline junkies there is white water rafting, bungy jumping, parapenting, sky diving and jet boating up shallow river canyons. There is also excellent fly fishing in crystal clear waters, vineyard tours, tramping and 4WDing in our famous wilderness national parks, and a great selection of championship golf courses.
